Two and three year olds are the hardest age to plan for. Old enough to want something to happen, too young to sit through it. Short blocks, low expectations and somewhere safe to move around in.
A two year old's attention span for any single activity is roughly the length of the activity minus five minutes. That is not a joke about toddlers, it is the actual planning constraint, and it means a toddler party is structured as several short things rather than one long one.
The entertainers who do this well know it. A good toddler booking is bubbles for ten minutes, a parachute for ten, a song, a dance, a story, and around again. What it is not is a forty minute show.
Everything else follows from that. Ninety minutes total, a contained space, and an activity they can wander in and out of running underneath the structured bits.
The shape of the day

- Set up a play area that runs the entire party. Soft play, a ball pit or toddler hire. This is the backbone, not the extra.
- First 20 minutes. Arrival and free play in that area. No structure at all.
- 20 to 50 minutes. Structured blocks. Bubbles, parachute, a song and dance, a short story. Ten minutes each, and stop each one before they lose interest rather than after.
- 50 to 70 minutes. Food, then cake. Keep it simple and keep it early enough that nobody has hit the wall.
- Last 20 minutes. Back to free play while parents collect their things. The play area earns its hire fee again here.

How long should a toddler birthday party be?
Ninety minutes. Two hours is possible with a play area running the whole time, but ninety is where most two and three year old parties finish while everyone is still enjoying themselves.
What entertainment works for a 2 year old?
Short blocks rather than a show. Bubbles, parachute games, songs and a story, ten minutes each. An entertainer who works with this age will cycle through several of them and read when to move on. A forty minute performance will not hold them.
Do I need an entertainer or just play hire?
Play hire is the backbone at this age and does more of the work. An entertainer on top is worth it if you want structure and a break from supervising, but if you can only book one thing, book the play area. See toddler play hire.
Can toddlers use a jumping castle?
Only a toddler specific unit with lower walls and gentler features, and only with an adult watching constantly. Standard castles have height and age limits set by the operator and mixing toddlers with older children on one is where most injuries happen.
What time of day is best?
Late morning, after the first nap if they still have one. Mid afternoon collides with either the nap or the point in the day when two year olds are least resilient.
How many children should I invite?
Small is better at this age. Six to ten toddlers is plenty, and remember every one of them arrives with an adult, so a small guest list is still a full room.
